Beer is fermented alcoholic carbonated beverage, prepared using malted barley, water, hops and yeast as major raw materials. There are two distinct aspects to judge the beer quality. The first is its relative nature, kind, or character and the second, its degree of excellence. In the former case, we are, for example, talking of beer types in terms of the method of production, place of origin, or style. Examples would be the, brewing more percentage of two row malt with possibly replacement of rice, sugar and other source of starch. Brewed with best strain of yeast with unique processing practices accepted from the world’s best brew master. This aspect would also include many quality parameters that are perceived even before the beer is consumed. For example, color, clarity, and presence (or not) of foam are the basic criteria to judge the beer quality.

The degree of excellence represents the flavor of beer, With the exception of control of bitterness, control of overall flavor is the most difficult aspect of quality. It mostly depends upon the selection of raw materials and yeast, consistent processing, and hygienic operations. Flavor evaluation is used to monitor uniformity, changes in raw materials, or process and development of new products.

Let’s talk about how good beer can positively contribute to healthy diet,

I usually see the people in Asian countries have not good feelings towards Beer and alcoholic beverages by means of socialism. But European and African people use these beverages to make a good relation and time with their colleagues. Limited consumption of Beer can make you healthy and physically strong. Beer is more than 93% water and is a thirst quenching long drink which is relatively low in alcohol and hence “Drink Beer Save water” is famous quote in American cities. Moderate consumption of beer can provide essential vitamins and minerals. It is high in potassium and low in sodium, both of them are micronutrient to balance low blood pressure. Like other starchy foods, beer is an excellent source of vitamins which are essential for life. Furthermore malting process eventually increases the nutritional value of the cereals used to make beer. In particular beer is rich in the B type vitamins and Vitamin B is good to protect the body from nerve damage, to repair of DNA, lowering cholesterol and good for blood also. Good Beer is low in calcium and is rich in magnesium which may help to protect against gall stones and kidney stone formation. This may be one reason why daily consumption of a glass of beer has been shown to reduce the risk of kidney stones by almost 38-42%. Beer is also a source of soluble fiber which is derived from malted barley. Half a liter of beer contains an average of 10% of the recommended daily intake of soluble fiber and some beers can provide up to 30%. Other than keeping you regular, this has a further benefit by slowing down the digestion and absorption of food and reducing cholesterol levels which may help to reduce the risk of heart disease. Recent research also concluded that moderate consumption of alcoholic drinks has a protective effect on bones which can reduce the risk of weakening of the bones, may protect against thyroid problems such as goiter. Wow! Health benefits of beer are amazing! Right?

But I suggest you not to consume beer as your water or calorie substitute.

How to select a variety of beer?

I had done a small survey in around hundred beer loving people from Kathmandu. Among them, I got one common parameter to judge beer before purchase and was ‘how many bottle is sufficient to make me fully drunk’ and was directly related to “amount of alcohol content”. But as a beer lover, I suggest to have other hard drink instead of beer if you want to get intoxicated even with small sip.

From that survey, another parameter to judge beer quality was, ‘Bitterness’, Nepalese consumer really like a sweet and sour type of beer instead of bitter one. From my some research, I came to conclude that, sourness comes from contamination of lactic acid bacteria and other chemical oxidation. They are really bad for beer quality. For your information, Bitterness in beer comes from hops and is intentionally added to beer for its mouth feel and aroma. Trust me, if you started to consume bitter beer, you will be habitual like me, I prefer bitter one!

Appearance: Look at the color inside bottle. For this you can use beer glass. Check the clarity of the beer. Swish it a little. If the head leaves trails on the edge of the glass it usually means it’s a higher-quality beer. And if you found more foam on your regular beer, never left this. It’s a good to have more head. You can feel real taste and flavor of your drink on it.

Including above parameter, Aroma, Mouth feel and taste of beer plays important role on quality time.

Insure, does the beer have a light or a full body when it is in your mouth? Take time to taste it, don’t just chug down a good beer. While it may take a true beer connoisseur to fully appreciate the beer’s color and aroma, you should be able to enjoy the taste. Good beer is complex and has a wide range of flavors in each sip.

And finally,

Please notice that, the information above is not meant to encourage consumption of beer as a means of promoting health or longer life. Beer is consumed for refreshment, enjoyment and to make your time enjoyable. Feel the difference between quality times with a glass of beer. However, it should be comforting to those who do consume beer regularly that, providing consumption is moderate and part of a balanced diet, it is not a health risk and there may be a net benefit. Let’s have a beer together! You can open it now, I will drink for sure!
